PTA BOARD MEETING (Correction)
September 12, 2007
CALL TO ORDER: President Lori Shimoda called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM in the MES library.
VOTING MEMBERS PRESENT: Margaret Bailon-Labednick, Wendell Oumaye, Reiko Kobayashi, Ernest Ramiscal, Manny Salvador, Wanda Kohashi
NON-VOTING MEMBERS PRESENT: Denise Arai, Carol Mann-Molay, Wendy Hadano, Michelle Gandee, Susie Okumura, Marissa Ayag-Garcia, Stephen Figart, Lyanne Figart, Lynn Muneno, Linda Keawe, Schaine Brents, Kirsten Kajiwara, Lisa Lee
MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING: Minutes were distributed for the July 11, 2007 Board Meeting. The minutes were approved as submitted.
TREASURER’S REPORT: E. Ramiscal submitted the MES Balance Sheet, MES PTA Profit and Loss Report, MES PTA General Ledger and Budget Report as of 8/31/07. The reports were accepted as submitted and filed for audit.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Portfolio Stuffing: C. Fukunaga thanks all who attended the portfolio stuffing on July 26th. Approximately 40 volunteers stuffed 900 portfolios in 1.5 hours. Special thanks to M. Salvador for the great cover design and to W. Kohashi for coordinating the pizza dinner. Thank you to Terri Kimura who will be chairing the committee next year.
Hospitality: W. Kohashi reported that 120+ children received childcare during Open House on 8/29/07. Approximately 24 helpers supervised the children. The Enjoy brand company provided containers for the children’s activities. New chair is needed for next year.
EBooks: 1300 books were ordered and 539 books were sold as of 9/11/07. Last day for EBook sale is 9/13/07 and final numbers will be shared at next board meeting.
T-Shirt: M. Salvador reported an increase of T-shirt sales this year. Sorting of T-shirt orders will be held in Cafe on 9/17/07. Any extra T-shirts will be sold at Fun Fair.
Newsletter: Submit articles to Manny via email Salvadorm007@hawaii.rr.com preferably as a Word document. A suggestion for upcoming newsletter article regarding explanation of Retreat (afternoon bugle call) was made.
Membership: Currently compiling membership database.
Reflections: M. Bailon-Lebednick reported 129 students participated last year. M. Gandee working on Reflections flyer.
Arts and Culture: M. Bailon-Lebednick and M. Gandee to co chair.
RAP: W. Hadano reported next RAP Meeting will be in the library on Sept 19. Planning for Read across America campaign in March and RAP committee has 20+ volunteers.
Fun Fair: L. Shimoda reported Fun Fair will be on Friday, Nov. 16 from 2-8pm and Nov.15 prepping will begin at 5:30pm and Clean up on Saturday Nov. 17. Flyers will be distributed asking for help for various Fun Fair committees. Committees will be co-chaired.
Man Power: L. Shimoda reported this committee is tapped for Fun Fair and any PTA sponsored projects and she is working to create a database.
Military Liaison: M. Ayag-Garcia introduced herself and explained what the committee can do to help military families and possibly tap military resources for the school.
Campus Beautification & Legislative: L. Shimoda reported there are interested parents who may chair these committees.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
Mural: W. Hadano contacted a resource person from Honolulu Art Center who will send an artist to help with school mural. HAC needs mural project to be grade specific and be implemented in 2nd semester. Cost is $1,200.00 PTA supports Mural Project and budget research for further discussions.
NEW BUSINESS:
PTA Website: S. Figart reported MES PTA Website can be created to help streamline PTA business. Ideas such as President’s Blog, EBook results, upcoming activities were discussed.
PTA Questionnaire: See attached handout.
SCC: K. Kajiwara reported School Community Council needs more parent involvement and would like to partner with PTA to be more effective. SCC meets every 2nd Wednesday of the month from 4-5:30pm.
ADMINISTRATION REPORT:
Longitudinal study of student assessment for k, 1, 2, 3 are now in progress with grades 4-6 to follow.
Faculty – Mrs. Arai reported Mrs. Arakaki has new position as assessment coordinator Mr. Boll will take over her class.
Renovations – Next project in Dec. to replace 2 air conditioning units in Library building
PCNC – Parent workshops scheduled on Sept 20: HSA Interpretation Meeting for Gr. 4, 5, 6 & Oct 11 @ 6:30pm: Understanding Standards Base Report Card/How Is Your Child Measuring Up?
