PTA BOARD MEETING
December 12, 2007
CALL TO ORDER: President L. Shimoda called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM in the MES library.
VOTING MEMBERS PRESENT: Cindy Fukunaga, Wendell Oumaye, Ernest Ramiscal, Wanda Kohashi, Doris Boushey, Margaret Bailon-Labednick, Reiko Kobayashi
NON-VOTING MEMBERS PRESENT: Denise Arai, Carol Mann-Molay, Susie Okumura, Stephen Figart, Lyanne Figart, Nicole Arceo, Kirsten Kajiwara, Marissa Ayag-Garcia, DeAnna Hayashi
MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING: Minutes were distributed for the October 10, 2007 Board Meeting. Minutes were approved as submitted.
TREASURER’S REPORT: E. Ramiscal submitted the MES Balance Sheet, MES PTA Profit and Loss Report, MES PTA General Ledger and Budget Report as of 10/31/07 & 11/30/07. Fun Fair Reports were also submitted. The reports were accepted as submitted and filed for audit.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Hospitality: W. Kohashi reported a new chair is needed for next year.
EBooks: a few books are still available for sale.
Health and Fitness: W. Oumaye reported Halloween treat bags were distributed in Oct.
Reflections: M. Bailon-Lebednick reported approx. 45 entries so far. Last day to submit entries is tomorrow Dec. 13th. Judging will be on Dec. 15th.
Arts and Culture: 5th Grade teachers are in contact with HAC for Mural Project.
RAP: November prizes to be passed out on Dec. 13th.
Fun Fair: L. Shimoda reported changes in planning and organization is in discussion.
Military Liaison: M. Ayag-Garcia reported flyers will be sent in Jan. to military families requesting a photo of their hero.
Legislative /Community: L. Shimoda discussed having candidates come to school and allow students to have a Q & A session to promote voting.
Campus Beautification: Sun Dial Project in final stages of planning. Benches for Kindergarten area along the walkway are currently in discussion. Temporary benches may be a better solution than permanent benches since benches can be put away. L. Shimoda in discussions regarding repairing roof of PTA containers.
NEW BUSINESS:
PTA Website: S. Figart’s reported MES website recorded 200 unique visitors and Email accounts were set up for members. L. Shimoda motioned to create Website Committee and S. Figart to chair.
Engineering Week: D. Hayashi reported 3 Engineering firms will donate monies to help conduct Egg Drop and Paper Airplane Contest which are open to all grade levels and a Popsicle Stick Bridge Making Contest for 5th Graders. Engineers will visit classes and discuss different types of bridges. PCNC will host workshop on airplane making (2/13). Contests will be held on the evening of 2/21.
Nomination Committee: L. Shimoda, M. Bailon-Lebednick and K.Kajiwara to chair Nomination Committee. President, 2 Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary need to be filled for next year.
Committee Organization: L. Shimoda suggested a new title such as Programs and then create sub-committees to help better utilize resources.
SCC: K. Kajiwara asked PTA for $42,000 to purchase ELMOs for every teacher. Issue will be brought up at next General Membership Meeting.
ADMINISTRATION REPORT:
New Librarian (Ross Inouye) was hired and will conduct classes after the winter break.
PTA is responsible for the maintenance bill of 4 air conditioners in the portables since purchased by PTA. Issue to amend budget for air conditioning will be brought up at next General Membership Meeting.
PCNC: PCNC and PTA will sponsor Spring Family Picnic planned for March 8th which will give an opportunity for families to socialize.

The next Board Meeting will be on February 13, 2008 at 6:00 PM in MES Library.
ADJOURNMENT:
President L. Shimoda adjourned the meeting at 7:20 PM.
