GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
May 12, 2009
CALL TO ORDER: President Lori Shimoda called the meeting to order at 5:40 p.m. in the MES courtyard since the members were gathered in the courtyard for the MES Starlight Concert.
VOTING MEMBERS PRESENT: A quorum of members was present.
MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING: The minutes from the December 2008 meeting was distributed and approved.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT: L. Shimoda
Documents Circulated
L. Shimoda reported that copies of the Treasurer’s Report was being circulated as well as copies of the December 2008 minutes. She requested that the members review both documents.
PTO
She further reported that an attorney has been retained to assist with the formation of the MES PTO. Once the PTO is established the existing MES PTA will be dissolved and the dues will no longer have to be paid to the PTA national organization. Currently only $1.00 of the dues paid by each member stays with the MES PTA. L. Shimoda asked for final approval for the formation of the PTO so that work can continue on the PTO formation during the summer. The membership voted to approve.
Cub Scouts
L. Shimoda reported that the PTA/PTO would be partnering with the MES cub scouts for the May 22, 2009 collection of leis and loose flowers for Memorial Day. Other scout troops will be sewing the flower leis on Friday evening.
Elections
There will be no election this year since the officers are still serving their two year term. This will be L. Shimoda’s last year as President. We will have new teacher representatives next year. L. Shimoda asked the membership to please get involved with the PTA now so that when the new officers take over they will have experienced members who have an idea on how to proceed. Currently the PTA needs help with committees; especially the fund raising committees. If you are interested in volunteering please contact L. Shimoda. Also, please visit the PTA website during the summer for announcements on activities.
Traffic Safety
L. Shimoda reported that a MES parent was involved in an accident this morning at 7:50 a.m. on Jarrett White and Mahiole. If you witnessed the incident please call Tammy at 744-4727 of contact the MES office.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer Robb Taone reported on the budget for the next academic year. He referred to the report and explained that the income and expenses on the front of the report consist of the figures that were approved last year. On the back of the report is a square. The square reports the budget for grade level teachers. He noted that the budget was submitted to him after the last scheduled PTA Board Meeting so he is not able to ask the members to approve the budget since it has not yet been approved by the PTA Board of Directors. However, he stated that the Board of Directors for the PTA will meet during the summer so that the budget can be approved during the next General Membership meeting which will take place in conjunction with the Open House in July, 2009. Right now we are approving last year’s numbers for the 2009-2010 budget. During the Open House the actual budget will be subject to approval. The members voted to approve the budget which was put before them.
