The PTO account has $39,500 in its account due to E-Books. The PTO will need to file taxes. A CPA is required since last year’s CPA has pulled out since the laws changed and made the job cumbersome. The PTO will pay for the services of the CPA. Please refer any interested parties to R. Taone.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:
RAP – L. Lee and Christine Enrico. They will post the names of winners on the website.
FUN FAIR- Meetings are scheduled for: October 26, November 9 and November 16 at 6 p.m.
ARTS & CULTURE/REFLECTIONS – L. Shimoda reported that the Fifth Grade mural was being worked on.
HOSPITALITY – M. Ledda. L. Shimoda thanked M. Ledda for dinner. M. Ledda needs volunteers to assist with tasks such as purchasing food and setting up for dinner.
MANPOWER- F. Wang If F. Wang does not hear of any changes required he will keep the numbers the same as last year. L. Shimoda proposed a volunteer “fast pass system”. Parents who volunteer for more than two shifts will earn fast passes for their children. It was noted that this would not benefit the volunteers so there was a discussion on giving volunteers free water. It was mentioned that donors would not be receiving any benefits. L. Shimoda noted that it would be impossible to be fair to everyone since each person assists in some manner such as setting up, donating and working shifts. It was suggested that volunteers get parking on a first come, first served basis. It was also suggested that volunteers get early admission to buy plants, or rummage sale items. Other suggestions included volunteers getting a free pass to a free break room or a lottery whereby volunteers are eligible to win a free stay at a hotel.
Volunteer Support – Non MES volunteers such as the Explorers help with the Fun Fair. It was noted that we can’t give one meal to every volunteer. L. Shimoda wants to provide dinner and drinks to the Explorers. The Lions Club members and Explorers volunteer for the whole night thus it is also important to provide dinner to the members of the Lions. Those who assist with tear down after the Fun Fair can help themselves to left over drinks. It was suggested the volunteers get a meal ticket instead of a prepared meal. A concern was raised that volunteers won’t have time to get in line to get a meal. Jay said that there will probably be a dozen Explorers. A final headcount is required.
CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION: Principal Arai reported that the following facility improvements were planned: Termite abatement systems will be installed in A&B buildings. Hawaiian Tel has been contracted to replace the existing program bell system and they hope to it will be operational in the next month. Will be in LAN.
TEACHER FURLOUGHS: Principal Arai reported that there have been many discussions on teacher furloughs. She hopes to get information out to the parents by Friday. She invited everyone to join them for the SCC meeting at 4:30 p.m. on October 20 to discuss furloughs.
SUSIE OKUMURA: S. Okumura reported that the newsletter will contain a description of activities including the Pumpkin Patch. This year it has been down sized to smaller pumpkins because of the lack of a grant. The fifty cent that parents pay is below cost. An informational packet will be sent home. On October 29th the children are to drop off their pumpkins. Last year children were given two dots to vote for pumpkins. This year a student must donate a food item to earn dots to vote. Donations will be given to the Hawaii Food Bank.
The school photographer is offering a family photo session for $20.00. The session will consist of six to eight shots. He will put them on a CD and the families will have to print it out for themselves. The money will be donated to the school. The photographer is donating all of the profits to MES. Non-MES families are also welcome to participate.
